What happens to an accumulator if a match is postponed or void?

At most bookmakers, a void leg is treated as if it had odds of 1.00. It drops out of the accumulator, the total odds fall, and the remaining legs still have to win. If every leg is void, your stake is returned. Rules on postponed and abandoned matches vary by bookmaker, so always check yours.

What does “void” mean in betting?

A void bet, sometimes called “no action” in the US, is one the bookmaker cancels rather than settles as a win or a loss. On a single bet, a void means your stake comes back. On an accumulator (a parlay in the US), only that leg is cancelled. The rest of the ticket stays live.

Common reasons a leg is made void include:

  • The match is postponed and not played within the time the bookmaker allows.
  • The match is abandoned before the result of your market is decided.
  • The market is settled as a push. For example, a draw no bet pick when the match ends level returns the stake on that leg, so it acts like a void.
  • An error in the price or the market, which the bookmaker cancels under its terms.

How does a void leg change the odds?

Because accumulator odds are the odds of each leg multiplied together, replacing one leg’s odds with 1.00 simply removes it from the sum. Here is a hypothetical four-leg ticket with a £10 stake:

LegSelectionOdds
1Home win1.60
2Both teams to score: Yes1.75
3Over 2.5 goals2.10
4Double chance: away or draw1.90

With all four legs live, the total odds are 1.60 × 1.75 × 2.10 × 1.90 = 11.172, so £10 would return £111.72.

Now see what happens in different situations:

What happensCalculationTotal odds£10 returns
All four legs win1.60 × 1.75 × 2.10 × 1.9011.17£111.72
Leg 3 void, others win1.60 × 1.75 × 1.00 × 1.905.32£53.20
Legs 3 and 4 void, others win1.60 × 1.75 × 1.00 × 1.002.80£28.00
All four legs void1.00 × 1.00 × 1.00 × 1.001.00£10.00 (stake back)
Leg 3 void, leg 2 losesAny losing legn/a£0

Two things stand out. First, a void leg cuts the potential return, sometimes by a lot. Second, a void does not rescue the bet: if another leg loses, the whole ticket still loses.

How long do bookmakers wait for a postponed match?

There is no single answer. Each bookmaker sets its own rule. Some void a postponed match if it is not played on the original date. Others keep the bet open for a set window, such as a day or two, and settle it normally if the match is played within that time. Some make an exception when a match is moved but the opponents and venue stay the same.

Because these rules differ, a postponed match on one ticket could be void at one bookmaker and still live at another. Read the “postponed matches” section of your bookmaker’s terms before you bet, especially in winter, when weather postponements are more common.

What about abandoned matches?

Again, rules vary. A common approach is:

  • Markets already decided stand. If your pick was Over 0.5 goals and a goal was scored before the match was stopped, many bookmakers settle that leg as a win.
  • Markets not yet decided are void. A match result (1X2) or Over 2.5 goals pick, for example, usually cannot be settled if the game never finishes.

Some bookmakers use the result at the moment of abandonment for certain markets, and some void everything. Check before you rely on either.

Can you avoid problems with void legs?

You cannot control postponements, but you can reduce the surprises:

  • Check the kick-off times and any weather or fixture warnings before adding a leg.
  • Know your bookmaker’s rules on postponed and abandoned matches.
  • Recalculate after a void. Your potential return will be lower, which may change how you feel about cashing out if your bookmaker offers it.
  • Do not add a replacement leg in a hurry just to restore the old odds.

Where Daily Betting Tips fits

Daily Betting Tips is not a bookmaker and takes no bets, so how a void leg is settled always depends on your bookmaker’s rules. What the app does is publish three ready-made accumulators every day, safe, medium and risky, and mark each ticket won, lost or pending. The bet builder shows you the total odds for your own combination, which makes it easy to see how much a ticket depends on any single leg.
