What is an accumulator (parlay) bet?
An accumulator is a single bet that combines two or more selections, called legs, into one ticket. Every leg must win for the bet to pay out. The odds of each leg are multiplied together, so the potential return is much bigger than on a single bet, but so is the chance of losing.
What does an accumulator look like?
An accumulator, or “acca”, is the UK name. In the US the same bet is called a parlay. A two-leg accumulator is often called a double, a three-leg one a treble, and anything bigger a four-fold, five-fold and so on.
Each leg is a separate prediction, usually from a different match. A typical football accumulator might look like this:
| Leg | Match (hypothetical) | Selection | Decimal odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Team A vs Team B | Team A to win | 1.50 |
| 2 | Team C vs Team D | Both teams to score: Yes | 1.80 |
| 3 | Team E vs Team F | Over 2.5 goals | 1.65 |
| 4 | Team G vs Team H | Draw no bet: Team H | 2.00 |
| Total | 8.91 |
The total odds are 1.50 × 1.80 × 1.65 × 2.00 = 8.91. A £10 stake returns £89.10 if all four legs win, which is £79.10 profit. If any one of them loses, the whole ticket loses and you get nothing back. The guide on how accumulator odds are calculated goes through the maths step by step.
How is an accumulator different from betting singles?
With singles, each selection is its own bet. One loser does not affect the others. With an accumulator, one loser sinks the lot.
Here is the same four picks, staked two ways with £40 in total:
| Outcome | Four £10 singles | One £40 accumulator |
|---|---|---|
| All four win | £15.00 + £18.00 + £16.50 + £20.00 = £69.50 back | £40 × 8.91 = £356.40 back |
| Legs 1-3 win, leg 4 loses | £15.00 + £18.00 + £16.50 = £49.50 back | £0 |
| Only leg 1 wins | £15.00 back | £0 |
The accumulator pays far more when everything goes right, and nothing at all when one thing goes wrong. Singles pay less at the top but give you something back when you are partly right. Neither is “better”; they suit different goals and budgets.
Why are accumulators so popular?
- Big returns from small stakes. A few short-priced picks can combine into odds of 5.00, 10.00 or more.
- One ticket to follow. It is simple to place and easy to track across a weekend of matches.
- More interest in more matches. Every game on the ticket matters to you.
The catch is that the chance of winning falls with every leg you add, because every leg has to come in. Three picks that each look fairly likely can still combine into a bet that loses most of the time.
What can go wrong with an accumulator?
- One late goal can end it. You can be right about four matches and still lose because of the fifth.
- The bookmaker’s margin builds up. Every price includes a margin, and in an accumulator those margins multiply together.
- Linked legs. Picks from the same match often depend on each other, so many bookmakers restrict or reprice them.
- Postponed or void matches. If a game does not go ahead, that leg is usually removed and the odds drop. The rules vary by bookmaker; see what happens if a leg is void.
How can you make an accumulator less risky?
You cannot make it risk-free, but you can choose how much risk you take:
- Use fewer legs. Two to four is easier to land than eight or ten.
- Prefer shorter prices. Lower odds per leg means a likelier, but smaller, return. Our guide to safe and risky accumulators explains what those labels really mean.
- Consider a system bet. A Trixie or Yankee covers combinations so one loser does not wipe out everything, at the cost of a bigger total stake.
- Set a budget first. Decide what you are happy to lose before you place the bet.
Where Daily Betting Tips fits
Daily Betting Tips, an iOS and Android app made by MICOM TECH, publishes three ready-made accumulators every day: safe, medium and risky. Each ticket is marked won, lost or pending, and you can browse past days to see how earlier tickets ended. If you prefer to pick your own legs, the bet builder lets you combine selections from markets such as 1X2, both teams to score, Over/Under, double chance and draw no bet and see the total odds. The app is not a bookmaker and takes no bets.
