What is a system bet (Trixie, Patent, Yankee)?

A system bet places every combination of your selections as separate bets in one go. A Trixie covers three picks with four bets, a Patent adds three singles for seven bets, and a Yankee covers four picks with eleven bets. One losing pick no longer sinks everything, but the total stake is higher.

How is a system bet different from an accumulator?

In a normal accumulator (a parlay in the US), every leg must win. A system bet takes the same picks and builds a set of smaller bets from them: doubles, trebles and sometimes singles. Some of those smaller bets can still win when one pick loses.

The stake you choose is per bet, not per ticket. A £1 Trixie is four bets, so it costs £4. A £1 Yankee is eleven bets, so it costs £11.

Which bets are in each system?

Bigger systems exist for five or more picks, and some bookmakers describe them by numbers instead of names, such as “2 from 3” for three doubles. The idea is the same: you choose which sizes of combination to cover.

How does a Trixie pay out?

Take three hypothetical picks: A at 2.00, B at 1.80 and C at 2.50, with £1 on each bet (£4 in total).

BetCalculationReturn if it wins
Double A + B£1 × 2.00 × 1.80£3.60
Double A + C£1 × 2.00 × 2.50£5.00
Double B + C£1 × 1.80 × 2.50£4.50
Treble A + B + C£1 × 2.00 × 1.80 × 2.50£9.00
  • All three win: £3.60 + £5.00 + £4.50 + £9.00 = £22.10 back from £4, a profit of £18.10.
  • A and B win, C loses: only the A + B double pays, so £3.60 back from £4, a loss of £0.40.
  • Only one wins: no double or treble can land, so you get nothing back.

Compare that with putting the whole £4 on a single treble. If all three win, the treble returns £4 × 9.00 = £36.00, more than the Trixie. If one loses, the treble returns £0. The Trixie gives up some of the top return in exchange for a smaller loss when you are mostly right.

How does a Patent change things?

A Patent is a Trixie plus a single on each pick. With the same picks at £1 per bet, it costs £7.

  • All three win: singles return £2.00 + £1.80 + £2.50 = £6.30, plus the Trixie’s £22.10, for £28.40 back from £7.
  • A and B win: singles return £2.00 + £1.80 = £3.80, plus the A + B double at £3.60, for £7.40 back from £7.
  • Only A wins: the single returns £2.00 from £7.

The singles mean one winner is enough to get something back, though not enough to cover the stake here.

What about a Yankee?

A Yankee uses four picks and covers every double, treble and the four-fold: 11 bets. With £1 per bet it costs £11. You need at least two winners for any return at all, and with short-priced picks two winners may return less than the £11 you staked. The more picks that win, the faster the return grows, because each extra winner adds new doubles, trebles and possibly the four-fold.

Is a system bet less risky than an accumulator?

It spreads the risk differently, but it is not risk-free. You are more likely to get something back, but you are also staking more money for the same picks, and the bookmaker’s margin applies to every bet in the system. If most of your picks lose, you lose the whole stake. For more on how the number of legs and the odds shape risk, see what makes an accumulator safe or risky.

A practical rule: decide the total amount you are happy to spend first, then divide by the number of bets to find your unit stake. £6 on a Yankee is about 55p per bet, not £6 per bet.

Where Daily Betting Tips fits

Daily Betting Tips publishes three ready-made accumulators every day, safe, medium and risky, and its bet builder lets you combine your own picks from markets such as 1X2, both teams to score, Over/Under, double chance and draw no bet, showing the total odds. That total is a quick way to check what each double or treble in a system would be worth. The app is not a bookmaker, so system bets are placed and settled at your bookmaker under its rules.
